Pickles and Pop Tarts
So, the cabinets come next week. I've still got quite a bit to do in the kitchen between now and then, but I've been noticing something interesting. Since our kitchen remodeling project began, our cabinets and fridge have slowly been declining in stored food volume. This causes some good things to happen, and some bad (perhaps I should warn you that I am a midnight snacker -- OK, maybe 2:00AM -- and that I get up almost every night for a bite to eat, or a glass of milk or something).
Good things:
- Midnight snacking is kept to a minimum
- unused items are readily identified and disposed of
- we notice the things we use very often and can list those things for purchase soon after the cabinets are installed
- we don't have to worry about running out of things, because we most likely already have
- I'm planning my lunch meals better than ever (PB&J is easy and quick)
Bad things:
- Midnight snacking has taken on a whole new form, in that anything that is edible (sometimes questionably so) is now fair game. This includes, but is not limited to
- bags of chocolate chips
- cookie/cake sprinkles
- Carrs table water crackers
- York Peppermint Patties of undetermined age
- Zingers spicy pickles
- untoated Pop Tarts
- and more...
- Staring into the fridge and rummaging around through bags of once-cabinetted foodstuffs takes too long and sometimes I actually fully wake up
- the dog wants to know what's going on in the kitchen in the middle of the night for goodness sake
Clearly, having a kitchen is a nice thing. Having food is a nice thing. Unintentional dieting is, I guess, a good thing. Hopefully the kitchen remodel will be done soon enough to prevent me from eating frozen Chicken Cordon Bleu or salad dressing in the middle of the night.
